July Meeting and Battle of the Brews

Just a quick reminder, the July meeting will be at Patti & Doug Griffith's house - home of Extreme Brewing, on July 14th. The usual - bring a dish to share and/or your latest fermented creations, but it is not required. Just come and enjoy the evening. If you need any supplies, I'm sure that Doug will be able to help you out.

NEXT, entries are due for the Delaware Battle of the Brews. All entries MUST be submitted by July 10th at one of the drop-off points. See the website http://battleofthebrews.webs.com for details and locations.

MAY MEETING

The May meeting will take place Thursday, May 12th at Dogfish Head in Rehoboth. This will be the final meeting at the pub until October - due to the wonderful summer tourist/parking meter season. Things will get rolling around 7pm in the 2nd floor dining room. Bring your latest creations for folks to sample, or just come out and enjoy the evening - all we ask is for a $1 donation per person.
The summer meeting schedule is set and will be working this way:

July 14th: Delmarva Brewing Craft in Millsboro

Guess what? It's time to announce the April meeting date...... BIG SURPRISE....it's on Thursday, April 14th. We'll be meeting in the upstairs dining room at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach. Things will get rolling around 7pm. Feel free to bring samples of your latest fermented creations, but it is not required to attend. All we ask is for a simple $1 per person donation, which grants you unlimited access to the club's Brew-fet table. A magical wonderland of variety. (?) I'll be filling-in for our ever-vacationing President, and will do my best not to piss too many people off (other than my wife). I'll give you the latest information on the Mystery yeast Competition and the Battle Of the Brews Competition....or I'll just make stuff up. If you have any questions, or concerns, drop me a note or ask me point-blank at the meeting. If I don't answer....I'm probably passed-out, or beaten unconscious by Jessica, for the remark above. Yeast Pick-Up

Yeast pick-up started tonight down at the Dogfish Head Pub in Rehoboth....we went through half of our allotted supply. If you are planning on entering, I would suggest you get on your horse and ride to the pub or either XtremeBrewing location; plop down your $5 and get your propagation in rotation (?). If ANYONE has questions about the yeastie-feastie - drop me a note. I'll respond to any legitimate concern........

MARCH MEETING

Battle of the Brews at the Delaware State Fair

The Delaware Department of Agriculture and Delaware State Fair are excited to announce Delaware’s first AHA/BJCP-sanctioned homebrew competition – the inaugural Delaware State Fair - Battle of the Brews – July 23, 2011 on the Delaware State Fairgrounds.

Details, printable flyers, etc. can be found at official competition website, but here are the most important things to remember: You must register at the Delaware State Fair between April 1 & June 1, 2011 and then deliver your beer (see website) by July 11. To maximize your beer karma, make sure you use plain bottles labeled with BJCP Bottle ID forms (attach with a rubber band please).

Cash prizes will be awarded for Best of Show winners and category winners will be honored with fame, notoriety, (and ribbons). And we’ll have and craft beer education and sampling activities going on during judging.

Spread the word about the Battle of the Brews on BeerAdvocate and Facebook.

IT'S OCTOBER, SO THAT MEANS WE START MEETING AT DOGFISH HEAD BREWINGS & EATS AGAIN! That's right, the October meeting is scheduled for this coming Thursday, October 14. We'll get things rolling in the upstairs dining room around 7pm.
As always, bring your latest fermented creations to share - although bringing something is not required to join the festivities. The only thing you need to bring is a dollar for each person attending (club dues). It's pizza night at Dogfish Head, so come on in for dinner and the meeting - there will be a server available upstairs to take care of our group.

Just to remind everyone who reads this drivel, the June meeting of the Delmarva United Homebrewers will be happening Thursday, June 10th. We'll be gathering at Jess & Terry's Jester Acres in glorious Ellendale, Delaware. Things will kick-off at 5pm. If you need directions, drop me a note and I'll get you here (hopefully).

DELMARVA MAD BREWER COMPETITION RESULTS

Sorry for the delay in getting the results posted, but it was a hectic work week, combined with hockey playoffs - so I'll get to the results.

We had 24 entries from across the peninsula and surrounding areas. Our 9-person judging panel split judging duites, and after 3 rounds the final results were:

1st Place: Andrew Klingbeil from Bear, Delaware (AHA member)
Beer: American-style Farmhouse Ale: a saison brewed with agave nectar and an
American hop-influence (?)

2nd Place: John Mays from Claymont, Delaware (AHA member)
Beer: 30-Minute Pale Ale: An American pale ale with orange and coriander

3rd Place: Kent Spriggs from Wilmington, Delaware (First State Brewers)
Beer: Carraway Brown Ale: An English brown rye ale

Congratulations to the winners, and a thanks to everyone who entered. We hope that everyone who was able to attend the reception had a great time. If you haven't received your score sheets back already, they will be going out very soon.

We will have some light fare and left-over entries, but if you wish to bring along samples of your latest creation or something you want to share - feel free to do so. The February meeting will be back at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats on Thursday, February 11th. It's $6 pizza nite, so come for dinner and enjoy the ensuing stupidity. Everything will start promptly at 7pm in the upstairs dining room. Late arriving attendees will have to wait for the first television time-out before they will be escorted to their seats-they will then be ridiculed and flogged with wet noodles by the members who showed up on-time.
Topics of discussion will be the upcoming Mad Brewers Competition, as well as a slew of upcoming classes/events at Delmarva Brewing Craft/Xtreme Brewing. As many folks know, DFH has been closed for a few weeks for renovations. If this latest snow event has caused a delay in their re-opening, I will let everyone know via email and this wonderful blog where the gathering will take place. So check back here for any updates....and leave a comment, so I don't feel like I'm wasting precious beer-drinking time updating this damn blog!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Just a friendly reminder that the January meeting of DUH will take place on January 14th at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach. As usual, things will get started in the 2nd floor dining room around 7pm. Bring your latest fermented creations, or just come out and sample the efforts of your fellow homebrewers/wine-makers/meadists. Thursday is $6 pizza night at Dogfish Head, so come out for dinner and some laughs. The Dogfish Head pub will be closing on January 19th for a 3-week renovation, so this is the last pizza night until mid-February. I suggest you get off the couch and get to this meeting!

Next on the agenda, the 7th Annual Chili Cook-off at the Shipwreck Brewing Company lounge, deep in the woods of Lewes Delaware. See the post directly below this rambling mess for more information about the Novosel's annual shindig.

Tentatively scheduled for that same afternoon (January 23), myself and club president Jim Kroon will be doing an in-studio interview on WGMD (92.7fm). We'll be discussing the joys of homebrewing, as well as promoting our wonderful little community of misfits we call DUH. Tune in, call in or just sit on your couch performing shadow-puppet shows like you usually do on Saturday night.

Finally, we are bringing back the Delmarva United Homebrewers brewing competition. Details are being worked out, but the scheduled date of judging is April 25th. Keep your eyes glued here for more details. Doesn't everyone have this page set as their homepage?

7th Annual Chili Cookoff

Saturday, January 23rd.

Get ready to party in the Shipwreck Pub at John and Linda Novosel's. Bring your best chili if you want to compete for bragging rights and to get your name on the infamous "pink piggy" for Best Chili. Everyone gets to judge the top 3 chilis. If you are not bringing chili, any appetizer to share would be greatly appreciated! Drinking and appetizers start at 6 pm, and tasting of chili starts promptly at 7 pm. Please bring your chili in a crockpot with a small serving spoon. Don't bother to bring any condiments for the chili since we only use 2 oz. tasting cups--your chili has to stand on its own!

Also, feel free to bring any homebrews you want to share!

Directions: From route 24 and route 1 (McDonald's and Exxon), proceed west on route 24 about four miles to Peddler's Village. Then go one more mile on route 24 to the light. Turn right on Robinsonville Road for 1/4 mile. Turn left at the church-Conley's Chapel Road and go 1/4 mile to 32043 Conley Chapel. Driveway is on the right between two large stone walls. We are deep in the woods--you cannot see the house or pub from the street.

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

To start this off, the September meeting will be held on Thursday, September 10th. We'll be meeting at John Novosel's Shipwreck Brewery, deep in the wilderness of Lewes. Things will start around 6pm. Bring a dish or something to share (if you want to), and bring your latest fermented creation for tasting. If you need directions to John's, drop me a note.....

Next up, we are planning a big group brew here at Jester Acres on Saturday, September 12th. The details are still being worked out. Everyone is welcome to come out and hang-out, and if you want to get in on the process please send me a note and I will let you know when our first (and only) pre-production meeting will be held. The plan (as of the last discussion) is to brew a big-honkin' barleywine.....

On a final note, Jim Kroon has graciously accepted the mantle of "Grand Poobah" of The Delmarva United Homebrewers. It was voted on at the August meeting and the decision was unanimous. Congratulations to Jim, and good luck with putting up with shouting hordes at your monthly 'town hall meeting'. I will remain active by continuing as the PR person for the club...which means I'll still get dumped on, but now I can blame someone else!

AUGUST MEETING and stuff....

The August meeting will be taking place in Harrington on August 13th. PJ Saunders' has offered to sacrifice his homestead for this month's meeting. If you need directions (or didn't get the emails I sent out), just drop me a note with an email address and I'll shoot them right out to you.

On another note, the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) is having a membership rally on Saturday, August 8th at Sly Fox Brewing in Royersford, PA. Some folks from the group have been talking about heading up for the event. If you are interested, drop me a note and we'll see if we can make it happen.

Finally, if you are interested in getting a pit-pass for this year's Chunk.....drop me a note ASAP. We must have our list, photos and MONEY in by the start of September. So, if you want to join us.....the punkin' is in your court!

Upcoming Events

First, the plan right now is to hold the March meeting at The Loockerman Exchange in Dover. The date is March 12th, and the time remains 7pm as always. I will send out a detailed email to everyone as the date approaches, so those who don't have a clue where the place is can find it and I can give you an idea on the best places to park...in case all of the street parking is filled.

For anyone who wasn't at the last meeting, Mike Reese ( a member of DUH) is working at Nassau Valley Vineyards and passed around a sheet for members to get on the NVV newsletter mailing list. If you are interested in signing up, go to nassauvalley@dmv.com and get on the list.

And finally, Philly Beer week is coming up, March 6-15. Over 93 events at dozens of venues. Check out www.phillybeerweek.org for a full list of all the events, plus check Mid Atlantic Brewing News to find out all of the 'outside' events at different establishments!

Well, it's holiday time again....which means we need to move the meeting away from the cozy confines of Dogfish Head's pub. Alas, the December meeting will be held right here at Jess & Terry's house in scenic Ellendale.

The date is December 11th. Anytime after 5pm is fine for arrival. Bring a dish to share, if you would like to, but it is definitely not required. Bring your fermented creations along, and I'll make sure we have something(s) on-tap so you won't be tempted to invade my beer cellar.

AHA RALLY AT IRON HILL BREWERY

WHAT: AMERICAN HOMEBREWERS ASSOCIATION (AHA) MEMBERSHIP RALLY

WHERE: IRON HILL BREWERY & RESTAURANT ON THE RIVERFRONT IN WILMINGTON

WHEN: FRIDAY, AUGUST 8TH FROM 6PM - 9PM

THE EVENT: The AHA, in cooperation with Iron Hill Brewery, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Stewart's Brewing Company and Twin Lakes Brewing Company, is sponsoring a membership drive at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware.

Only AHA members may participate in the rally. Current members can renew their membership for $33 (instead of the current $38). Non-members may join the AHA at the rally and participate. As an added incentive, Dogfish Head will donate hats to any first-time, on-the-spot sign ups!

Each brewery will be donating some draft reserve beer. Only AHA members can get these beers. The beers will be $3 per pint, and all of the proceeds from these sales will be split between the 2 Delaware brew clubs ( DUH & First State Brewers)! There will also be some light food available to members.

If the weather cooperates, Iron Hill will set up two bocce games on the back lawn of the restaurant, and homebrewers can team up with Delaware's brewers for some great fun!

I need to update the club email list, since I've finally upgraded my computer. I think the best way to purge the club list of all the dead-ends is to force folks who still want to be on the list to send me their email addresses. I know who the 'hard-core' members are....but I've got loads of names of people who get on the list, but never get involved. Very soon, I'll be sending out a message to folks on the list. If I don't get a response, I'll purge your address from the list. Things I have tried lately...
Brooklyn Local 1 - Pretty good but I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Aventinus (2002) - Now this stuff was amazing, very rich. Could be one of my new favorites.

Russian River Damnation - Had this at Monk's last Friday, good, hoppier then I was expecting.

St. Benardus 12 - also at monks. First time I have had this on tap.

First off, Hoppy New Year to everyone. With the start of 2007, we start our monthly meeting schedule back at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth. The January meeting will be held Thursday, January 11th @ Dogfish Head in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
We'll get things rolling upstairs around 7pm, but get there early and have some $5 pizzas and a pint (or 2....). Items on the agenda for the evening include sharing each other's company as well as some folks latest brews/concoctions... WTF?: This is the 4th year that John & Linda Novosel have hosted this prestigious and bizarre event (although according to my records, the event itself has been going on for over 2000 years). Bring your best chili to be judged by a blind (drunk) tasting panel consisting of everyone present. The winner will be presented the coveted "Piggy Award", which resembles the Oscar statuette....only in pig form....but not made of pork products, like the Oscar.....sorry was thinking of Oscar Meyer. Everyone is welcome to this stellar event, no entry is required. John will have plenty of brew/wine. If you want to bring a dish to pass (other than chili) feel free, bring whatever you want or just bring yourself & guest(s).

.....AND WE'RE BACK!

Well, we survived the summer months here on the Delmarva peninsula somewhat intact. We had some great get-togethers throughout the summer......saw some folks that only get a chance to pop in every once-in-a-while, as well as some new faces who are just discovering the joys of homebrewing/wine-making/mead-ing (?). In short, summer was great! NOW, it's time to get down to business.
OCTOBER 12th.....We'll be meeting back at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats @7pm. Pizza nite is in full swing, so come and eat and have a drink before the meeting starts. We've got plenty of items to discuss, as well as beer/wine/mead/???? to taste. Some folks have expressed an interest in getting some written feedback on their beers (etc.), so we'll try to set-up some kind of organized tasting at each meeting with simple scoring sheets for members to score the beers (etc.) that are shared at the meeting. I'll bring the scoring sheets. All I ask is......if you have a beer (etc.) that you want members to taste and give written reviews on, try to notify before the meeting (via email) so I know how much sheet to bring that night, or get to the meeting an hour before it starts (when I usually arrive) and let me know you want to use scoring sheets. I hope this will avoid the chaos that sometimes (usually) occurs when we start pouring. We'll give it a shot and see how it goes.
MORE IMPORTANT STUFF......We're working on a competiton in conjunction with the First State Brewers. I will be looking for feedback and ideas from members for me to pass along to the folks upstate, plus we can discuss our own club-only competition.

This will be our last meeting at the pub until October, so get off your ass and get there! 7pm is when the meeting officially starts, but those who love DFH beer know that the pre-meeting starts when the doors open at 4pm.

BATTING 2nd:
SATURDAY, MAY 13th: "LET'S GO WINGS!" The 3rd Annual DUH Wing-Off.......As always, held at The Shipwreck Brewing Company Lounge and Drunk-a-torium. Bring your best version of chicken wings and/or beer, or just come out and join the fun and stuff your face! The beer starts flowing at 4pm, with "judging" starting somewhere around 6pm. Again, get off your ass and come out and have some fun with your fellow homebrewers and local idiots!. THURSDAY, JUNE 8th: "GRATEFUL TO BE ANYWHERE". The June meeting will be held right here, in my back yard in scenic Ellendale. Past attendees will tell you, we get to watch some awesome thunderstorms roll through in between games of bocce and horseshoes. AND (as always) the Grateful Dead Groove Lounge will be rockin', as will Dead Terry's shed of tunes......it's fun.

OH YEAH! It's time for the April club meeting. Sorry to those of you who will be observing Passover, or those who aren't allowed out on evenings when there's a full moon (and you hairy bastages know who you are), but the April meeting is Thursday, April 13th. We'll meet at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats (upstairs) in Rehoboth sometime around 7pm. Bring your latest creations or samples from your latest trip (DUDE!), and we'll pass them around for everyone to try. Unleaven bread welcome, just leave the lambs blood at home (Ok Moses?), and please....no Silver Bullets (of either kind).
On the agenda for discussion will be, first and foremost, the summer schedule for meetings. If you want to host a meeting during the months of June, July, August or September (remember, it's the 2nd Thursday of the month), then bring it.......YO! ALSO, we'll try to finalize a couple of dates for some club events (i.e. Wing-Fest '06, Club Competition '06, Idiot-Fest 2010). We're still looking for club dues also.......

YES, it's the return of the Crabby Pig-fest held at my undisclosed location in Ellendale, Delaware. The date is June 17th....details to follow......

DUH in Mid-Atlantic Brewing News

If you can still find a copy, check out the February/March issue of Mid-Atlantic Brewing News (which you should be reading anyway, there will be a test at the next meeting). Delmarva United Homebrewers gets some 'PUB' thanks to George Hummel and his Homebrew News column. A slight error in the snippet about SANDALS, but I have 'corrected' him (ala "The Shining"). I just happened to be reading the latest issue on my flight to Boston (the fest was amazing, as was everything else in Beantown), and there we were.....hopefully just the beginning of the juggernaut that shall become DUH! Do I see in the future "Homebrew Club of the Year"? Probably more likely a featured story on "America's Most Wanted".
SO..........how was the February meeting? Post your comments, or I'll have to 'correct' all of you too!

February Club Meeting.....Thursday, Feb. 9th

The February meeting of the Delmarva United Homebrewers (DUH) will be held on Thursday, February 9th at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach. As usual, the meeting will be held upstairs starting around 7pm. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend, and if you are interested in joining the club, and getting in on our club-only activities, the membership fee is only $20 per household annually.
As always, you do not need to bring your latest batch to attend but if you want to get feedback on your latest creation from fellow homebrewers, by all means bring it to the meeting. We are a homebrew/wine-maker/meadist/???/beer enthusiast organization, which means come and have some fun and if you have a good time and want to join DUH......all it takes is $20.
One note about the February meeting....Jessica and I will not be attending the meeting due to the fact that we will be in Boston for the Extreme Beer Festival (www.BeerAdvocate.com). If anyone wants to pay their dues at the February meeting, please give them to Mike Townshend, Mark Corea or John Mereider. They will forward the names (and dues) on to me so the member list can be made current. Jess and I will drink a toast (or two....or 3) to all of you on Thursday evening.
REMEMBER.....Thursday is $5 pizza night at Dogfish Head, so come in for dinner and have a great time getting to know (and make fun of) your fellow area homebrewers. Have a great time and I'll see everyone at the March meeting.....or at the Dogfish Head Chocolate Dinner, which is February 19th.

JANUARY MEETING

The first OFFICIAL meeting of the Delmarva United Homebrewers (DUH) will be held on Thursday, January 12th. We'll meet upstairs at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, starting around 7pm. Please remember, we'll be collecting annual dues at this meeting so bring some extra cash or your checkbook. Dues remain the same as previous years...$20 per household.
Thursday is $5 pizza night at Dogfish Head as well, so come on out for dinner, have some beer and enjoy the evening with your fellow homebrewers and beer-heads. Any questions? Just post a comment....otherwise we hope to see you on Thursday!

3rd Annual Chili Cook-off set for Saturday, January 21, 2006

John and Linda Novosel will be hosting our 3rd annual chili cook-off on Saturday, January 21, 2006. The event will be held at the Shipwreck Brewing Company Brewhaus in Lewes, starting at 5pm.
Bring your best chili to be judged by all present in a blind tasting. Bring your chili in a crock pot (if possible), though there is now a 4-burner cooktop in the Brewhaus if you don't have one available. There will be plenty of Shipwreck beer and wine on hand, but feel free to bring along your latest creation or whatever goes good with chili...in your opinion.
As always, I'll be sending out an email about the event to everyone on the club list, as well as the folks who signed up/showed up at the event at Fordham Brewery. That message will detail directions to the Shipwreck Brewing Company, as well as the telephone number there. Fordham Meeting.

I don’t know about everyone else but I had a blast last evening at Fordham. Mike and Walter were very gracious hosts and it was great to meet other Delaware brewers. Highlights for me were the Belgian Triple (Corny Keg in the middle) the vanilla porter, both from our friends up north, as well as John Novosel’s Pumpkin. Also a highlight was the return of Degroen’s Dopplebock. I told many of you last evening that I had an annual tradition of heading down to Baltimore Brewing Company right around the holidays to pick up a growler to two. Without it Christmas would not be the same.

I’ll be writing up a big old fat thank you letter for the folks at Fordham and I’ll be sure to post the text here.
